Sodom were formed in 1982 by bassist/vocalist Tom Angelripper and along with fellow countrymen Kreator and Destruction, they defined the seminal Teutonic thrash metal sound which would prove highly influential to the black and death metal scenes which rose to prominence in the 1990s. Heavily influenced by British metal bands such as Motörhead, Tank and Venom, Sodom’s early sound was a rough’n’ready triumph of enthusiasm over technique, but it bagged them a deal with the Steamhammer label who released the band’s debut EP In The Sign Of Evil in 1984. Their debut album Obsessed By Cruelty arrived in 1986 but offering the same crude sound as the previous EP, left Sodom behind the curve as ’86 also witnessed the release of thrash landmarks such as Reign In Blood and Master Of Puppets. ‘87’s Persecution Mania, however, was a vast improvement and together with its follow-up – 1989’s Agent Orange – elevated Sodom to thrash metal’s premier league. Agent Orange remains the best-selling German thrash album of all time.
Like almost all thrash bands of the 1980s, Sodom found themselves in a critical and commercial wilderness throughout much of the 1990s as the media turned their attention elsewhere. As a result, the albums Better off Dead (1990), Tapping The Vein (1992), Get What You Deserve (1994) and Masquerade In Blood (1995) sometimes suffered from shifts in musical direction made worse by never-ending line-up problems. Not until the release of ‘Til Death Do Us Unite in 1997 did the band’s line-up finally stabilize, returning to its full-on thrash roots with 1999’s storming Code Red. The band have since released three strong studio albums including 2007’s The Final Sign Of Evil, a re-recording of their popular debut EP alongside a host of long-lost early numbers.
