LOYDS TRIP
Writhing from mean forgotten streets of the northern industrial wasteland, strung out, downtrodden, cut to the bone, leather-clad Armor, denim, Levi jeans, a fondness for big old gas-guzzling machines, A Hard and heavy Rock n Roll Band. Mean as hell, and bad to the bone. “Loyds Trip” has come to neck pints and rip riffs all night!
Hailing out of South Yorkshire Frontman Danny Brown and Guitarist James “Jimmi” Allen banded together almost a decade ago, with a shared love for Blue Oyster Cult, Sabbath, Motorhead, and Budgie, James leaning in on trad blues and southern rock influences, early Cream, Johnny Winter, The Allman Brothers and Danny taking hits from 70s proto doom legends, Saint Vitus, Atomic Rooster, Jerusalem, and Leaf Hound, they had some killer jams at Sheffield’s DIY spot The Lughole with then bassist “Weird Chris”, who would eventually ride his chopper to Sweden, break down and never come back.
They jammed the Ramones, the Damned, Johnny Kid, and Rock n Roll golden oldies. And it was great fun, they knew they had something special, so they needed a drummer.
Tom met Danny at college, a long time ago, Danny would hang out at Tom's skateboard shop until they could go get drunk and listen to, Motorhead on the “Cutlers Arms” jukebox all night... Tom played drums, so that was that, They all shared a love for heavy-psyche, Acid Rock, and 70s Hard Rock, but also loved Punk and Metal so they would play the 70s stuff, but much faster.
After Weird Chris left for Sweden, an old friend of Danny’s joined on bass, and under the moniker “Strange Bru” they Started playing exclusively at house parties, squats, garages, D.I.Y spaces, and the oldest and smelliest working men's clubs still hanging on in at the time. Making their Debut at “The Lughole” one boozy Saturday night opening for the band “Zig Zags” (US), one review stating, “It’s Like ZZ Top, on Crack, Great stuff”.
They kicked it hard for 3 years, partied, riffed harder, played harder… gave blood, sweat, and tears, literally every show, some of these shows are considered iconic in local gig culture, they attracted hippies, bikers, metal-heads, punks, and their ritual was a celebration of all things heavy and good.
They are a fledgling member of the UK underground and D.I.Y metal and punk scenes and have never forgotten their roots or where they came from, they once described themselves as “rock n roll, with a hippie soul” always fighting the good fight, and champions of the good things in life, offering out a hand (or sofa) to those in need.
After rifts between the bassist and the rest of the band became apparent, they abruptly, loudly, and very sadly decided not to carry on, “Strange Bru” was done, with differences splitting the band through the middle, Tom joined a new band “Bodach” and in it would find healthy gig schedules and actual time to practice and play great shows up and down the country.
James and Danny spent their evenings crawling bars looking for barflies and potential band members, they tried several lineups, most of which sounded great, but lacked the connection, the unique glue that “Strange Bru” had together was missing and nobody filled the void.
Almost exactly a year after the split, Danny and James went to the cinema to see a then-recent Tarantino flick. Influenced by the soundtrack, a few beers afterward, and a long hard chat about the good times, they called Tom, whom they hadn’t spoken a word to all year, and put it simply…
“'We’re putting the band back together, we’re on a mission from God” (how else could you put it?) to which Tom replied, “I'm in”
They went hunting for a bassist straight away, they had a pretty strict required uniform of long hair, a weathered leather jacket, and big old boots, they wouldn’t consider anybody without it, skill and talent are one thing, but you had to have a good fitting leather...
So, when baby-faced, bleached blond haired-pointy shooed Kane “Leadmill” Barton came knocking, he was laughed out of the pub, they referred to him as being “to Leadmill”, which was once Sheffield's iconic gig venue, turned student indie night club.
Kane demanded that they give him a shot, so they got him very drunk and told him to meet them, bright and early the next day at the studio, and if he could handle it, they would give him a shot.
Danny, James, and Tom arrived at Yellow Arch Studios bright and early the next morning ready to Jam…
parked right outside on the street was a wide-eyed, bleached blond lunatic looking “Leadmill” Kid, with a bass in one hand and a ciggy in the other, pupils dilated, and bloodshot, his first words were “I've been here, all night learning the tunes” They laughed, and dragged this creature inside before the police locked him up.
They plugged in, and in one drunken night, camping in his car, the kid had learned all the old “Strange Bru” tunes, perfectly…
They jammed new ideas off the bat, and kicked out some 13 Floor Elevators and The sonics covers…
Much to their amazement, it had to be him, he played the songs better than everyone else.
They needed a name, and “Loyds Trip” came up, which was an inside joke between Danny, James and Tom (who at this point referred to themselves as Tres Hombres mind) ask them about it one day.
Funnily enough, it seemed that the next time they saw Kane, he had long hair, a beat-up leather jacket, and his dad's old Black Sabbath T-shirt from the 70s, it turns out his dad was a dead ringer for Ozzy back in the day, and a real hard rocker, so “Leadmill” had been brought up on it, who’d have thought?
Things moved quickly, they recorded 3 tracks which became “The Trip EP”, with Fids from the band “Pink Cigs” (Heavy Psych Sounds Records), and booked their first show, supporting “Dopelord” via “Holy Spider promotions”, they got offered a support slot with “Green Lung” receiving comparisons to the MC5 from critics and getting radio play up , and down the states, and an almost cult-like following in the north of the UK.
They put out a video for their track “Bridges” which hailed the 70s nostalgia the band had a deep connection to and love for.
They did photo shoots for promotions, practiced 3 times a week, and booked shows up and down the UK, until one day, the man on the news told everybody they had to stay home, lock the doors, then clap every Thursday…
No family no friends, and absolutely by no means, was anybody to kick out big stinking riffs, anywhere.
This lasted for 3 years…
Loyds Trip are a live band, it’s the chemistry of them playing together, homing in on their ability to metaphysically lock horns with each other, almost psychically know each other’s every thought, to read and react to each other, fluently, like, quantum entanglement or symbiotic connections or some other sci-fi kinda shit.
4 brothers doing what they love, and loving what they do.
Fuelled by a love only siblings knew.
A passion and belief in their art, a sacred energy, a kinship.
The stage was their workshop, and their work was Rock n Roll.
So, this lockdown business was devastating.
They snuck out one night early during the lockdown to jam in Danny's basement, they demoed an old “Strange Bru” track “Heavy Inducer” filmed it, and stuck it on the internet.
little did they know, it would be the last time the band would play together for 2 years. They lost jobs, they lost drive, ambition was at an all-time low, down and out once again, life had won the second hand.
But The show always goes on…
They never quit, coming out of lockdown, the band played relentlessly in every club, pub, and venue around Yorkshire, Derbyshire, and Lancashire, jumping on every lineup offered to them, with every band they could, They got back in the studio, recorded a full-length album, and established a new era for the band, a band who played 20 shows one year, on one practice and 3 tracks to their name (an about 4 hours sleep).
They’ve sat on the album until the time was right, and the time, has never felt better
The stars have aligned.
Loyds Trip are back, more driven, more ambitious, and tighter than you could ever imagine.
Equipped with an arsenal of brand-new tracks, plans to rerelease (May) re-mastered versions of their original material, on 7” with unheard bonus cover tracks, exclusive live sessions, impromptu
Jam sessions, and a full-length 12” of pure heavy hard Rock n Roll originals in June July of 2024.
Seriously, watch out for Loyds Trip this year, they are hungry, and taking on the world with fire in their hearts.
Their souls were destined to play their unique blend of 70s proto-punk, occult-themed heavy rock n roll, so get ready, it's coming.
Recently Sharing the stage with: “Green Lung”, “Heavy Sentence”, “Kurokuma”, “Conjurer”, “King Witch”, “Phill Cambel and The Bastard Sons”, “Wine Lips”, “Tuskar” “The Cavemen” and plenty other amazing bands up and down the UK.
And up-and-coming shows with “Nebula”, “Deathchant”, “The Death Wheelers”, “Old Horn Tooth”, “Poison Ruin”, “Josiah”, “Goblin Smoker”, “Inhuman Nature” and “Iron Jinn” to name a few… The Trip are battle-ready and is in discussions with European friends about heading to Europe early next year.
This is how I would describe Loyds Trip personally… If the MC5, Jim Morrison & ZZ Top (on crack lol) made sweet, sweet love on a pentagram of salt, next to two stubbed ciggy butts, whilst a pigeon with one foot strolled past, and the seminal self-titled Black Sabbath album played in the background, candles lit, on an old, damp wooden floor in an abandoned brewery in Yorkshire… these young men would be the love children of said orgy.
All Hail The Trip!
Long Live The Trip
