SATYRICON
In the early 1990s, black metal was largely unknown in Norway, but the underground scene was buzzing with activity. Among the prominent bands was Satyricon, a name familiar in the underground but obscure to the general public. They began by creating rehearsal tapes to gauge reactions and soon recorded their first official demo, self-titled "Satyricon." Their aggressive efforts in the European underground scene paid off, selling around 1000 copies. However, internal issues led to lineup changes, with Frost joining as a key member.
Satyricon's next demo, "The Forest is My Throne," marked a significant development in their style and was well-received, selling over 1500 copies. Their growing reputation caught the attention of No Fashion Records in Sweden, leading to a record deal. This was a notable achievement, especially considering the difficulty of securing record deals at the time.
The band, particularly Satyr, was inspired by medieval themes, which influenced their lyrics and music. Despite another lineup change, Satyr and Frost's core partnership remained, strengthening the band's direction. Their debut album, "Dark Medieval Times," faced financial hurdles during recording, but the band's determination saw it through to completion.
The album's success led to the formation of Moonfog, a label initially intended to distinguish Satyricon's work under Tatra Productions. "Dark Medieval Times" was a hit in the underground scene, establishing Satyricon as a key player in black metal. The album's unique style, blending dynamics, acoustic passages, and medieval influences, set trends in the genre.
Satyricon continued to evolve with albums like "The Shadowthrone" and "Nemesis Divina," each marking significant progress in their musical journey. The band's willingness to experiment led to "Megiddo." Throughout these changes, the constant presence of Satyr and Frost has been pivotal to Satyricon's success and influence in extreme metal, garnering a wider audience due to their versatility.
